Nutritious Meals and Snacks

Afterschool

Looking to provide nutritious snacks and/or meals to students during after school?  The At Risk Afterschool Meals Program is a component of the Child and Adult Food Program (CACFP).  CACFP is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) federally funded program administered by the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS).  The program provides reimbursement to eligible after school programs serving nutritious meals and snacks to children in low income areas.

DSS offers monthly orientations on becoming a sponsor organization which provides meals to multiple programs and is reimbursed or to become an independent program to provide meals to own students, then is reimbursed. To learn more contact Dyeretta Fashion at (803) 898-0945.

Summer Camps

Learning and nutrition continues during summer months.  To help continue nutritious meals and snacks throughout the summer, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Office of Health and Nutrition offers the Summer Food Services Program to provide nutritious meals and snacks to children 18 years and younger. Read the FAQ.

For the nearest locations serving meals, call 1-866-3-HUNGRY (en Espanol: 1-877-8-HAMBRE)  or visit the website.

Partnership in Action!

The Mozilla Foundation invited the SC Afterschool Alliance to bring a team to Aurora, Colorado to explore competency-based education and digital credentials. Our team included:

The team had three aspirations, one of which is a Med School at Ridgeview High School, a scaled-up afterschool program for any 9th-12th grade interested in Health Sciences offering digital badges and credits. Students in five high schools across the district will learn about the MED Two program via school and district websites, newsletters, blogs, social media, morning news shows, and school marquees. Billboard space was purchased on five boards located across the school district. Students attending five seminars will earn a digital badge for their work. High school credit will be earned for completion of courses.
